Invest in Your Employees: Your Greatest Assets

May 30, 2017Morgan Leverett

It probably goes without saying but, training and continuing education is important. Learning for both personal and professional purposes helps people grow. Today, we’ll touch on training from a professional standpoint.

Having trained employees is valuable to any company. In fact, when you look past the cost of time and materials, you’ll find that company sponsored education can help to save you money.

Educating your staff means that they’re learning new skills that can help them improve their production.

• The training could make them more efficient, cutting down on the time it takes them to complete a task
• Training can foster a better understanding of what they’re doing thus resulting in fewer mistakes.
• Fewer mistakes lowers the cost of time and materials involved in doing the task a second time.
• Fewer errors also encourages a better experience from employee to client.
• Training your staff can build employee confidence and promote a better working environment.

If you take care of your employees, they will take care of your customers, and as a result your company. You could look at it this way, an investment in your employee’s skills is an investment into your business. It makes everyone better.

It is important that as Managers, you train your staff when they’re first hired and on an ongoing basis. Dietary Regional Manager, Lisa Coffee, provides us with some tips on training staff in our facilities.

Initial Training
• All New Hires should go through a standardized training process.
• Each New Hire should receive orientation at their facility and their manager should review their job responsibilities with them.
• Provide Food Safety knowledge.
• Document all trainings done with the employee.

Ongoing Training
• Conduct Weekly In-Service trainings with staff, according to a pre-set schedule.
• Take this training time each week to answer questions and work with your group; identify any training gaps. This is what your staff knows, and what they need to know.

How to Identify the Training Gap
• Observe your employees performance on the job
• Test their knowledge: quiz them as you’re training
• Identify areas of weakness, what areas does each individual struggle in
Record keeping
• Keep records of all training in your facility. Make sure in-service sign in sheets are filled out completely
• You can use many methods to train. No single method is best for all staff. Using many methods will result in more effective learning. Some people learn best by reading, listening or doing
• When you’re confident an employee knows the proper procedure, let them train another employee on it. Often the act of teaching another helps cement the knowledge for the teacher

A few training methods
• On the job training: pair new employees with more experienced employees
• Guided discussion: ask questions that will draw on their knowledge and experience. The goal is to make them think and discuss their thoughts
• Demonstration: tell, show, practice
• Role play: prepare a skit, make it memorable, let them help you act it out
